Celebrate World Social Media Day with the Why We Post series

Posted on 30th June, 2026

World Social Media Day is an opportunity to reflect on the role social media plays in our daily lives and the ways in which it shapes communication, relationships and communities across the globe.

To mark the occasion, we’re highlighting the ground-breaking Why We Post series, a collection of open access books that explore how social media is used in different cultural contexts around the world. Drawing on ethnographic research conducted across nine countries, the series provides unique insights into the impact of social media on everyday life.

Whether you’re interested in communication, anthropology, digital culture or social change, the books offer an accessible introduction to how people use social media in different settings and for different purposes. All titles are available to download free in open access from UCL Press.
