Urban Displacement and Trade in a Senegalese Market receives honourable mention in the RAI Amaury Talbot Prize

UCL Press is pleased to announce that Urban Displacement and Trade in a Senegalese Market by Gunvor Jónsson has received an honourable mention in the Royal Anthropological Institute’s (RAI) Amaury Talbot Prize.
Based on extensive ethnographic research, the book examines the experiences of Malian women traders in Dakar following their displacement from the city’s Terminus market. In doing so, it offers new insights into urban displacement, migration and trade, highlighting the social and economic networks that help communities adapt to change.

The judges recognised its distinctive contribution to the study of urban Africa, urban displacement and migration within West Africa.
The judges praised the book as:
‘A rich account of Malian market women in Dakar, highlighting the dense social and economic networks that form after their displacement from the Terminus market in Dakar. Unique contribution to the literature on urban Africa, and urban studies, more generally, by examining the effects of urban displacement beyond residential evictions, (Muslim) women’s migration within West Africa.’
