The Hipster Economy

Today, being authentic has become an aspiration and an imperative. The notion of authenticity shapes the consumption habits of individuals in the most diverse contexts such as food and drinks, clothing, music, tourism and the digital sphere, even leading to the resurgence of apparently obsolescent modes of production such as craft. It also significantly transforms urban areas, their local economies and development. The Hipster Economy analyses this complex set of related phenomena to argue that the quest for authenticity has been a driver of Western societies from the emersion of capitalism and industrial society to today.

From this premise, the book advances multiple original contributions. First, it explains why and how authenticity has become a fundamental value orienting consumers’ taste in late modern capitalism; second, it proposes a novel conceptualisation of the aesthetic regime of consumption; third, the book constitutes the first detailed analysis of the resurgence of the neo-craft industries, their entrepreneurs, and the economic imaginary of consumption underpinning them, and fourth, it analyses how the hipster economy is impacting the urban space, favouring new logic of urban development with contrasting outcomes.

Case Studies in Perioperative Medicine

Case Studies in Perioperative Medicine is an online educational resource established by leading practitioners at UCL’s Centre for Perioperative Medicine. It explores clinically relevant issues, offers authoritative guidance and provides a wide variety of learning opportunities for both students and practising clinicians in perioperative medicine, by experts and practitioners from all over the world.

Case Studies in Perioperative Medicine will be presented on our innovative, open access BOOC (Books as Open Online Content) platform. Readers can filter material by three themes, ‘Contemplating Surgery’, ‘Undergoing Surgery’ and ‘Recovering from Surgery’. New content will be added over time making this an evolving and dynamic publication. This educational resource will contribute to maintaining and enhancing readers’ knowledge, skills and attitudes across many areas of their practice in perioperative medicine.

Each succinct, peer-reviewed, clinical case study is written in a comprehensible and engaging style and focuses on a single question, prefaced with a brief case history, providing a clinical context to the question being answered. Included within the case studies will be an opportunity for readers to interact with links, images, infographics and short videos, to improve knowledge retention and reader understanding.

Academic Book of the Future

This dynamic, innovative, evolving and open platform will publish contributions connected to the AHRC/British Library project, The Academic Book of the Future, which has been investigating key aspects of scholarly publishing for the last two years, led by a team of academics from UCL and Kings College London. The platform, which presents the content in the form of a BOOC (Books as Open Online Content), will grow during 2016 as more content is created, and will allow different ways to explore and share the ideas and discussions.

Authors from all areas of the academic, publishing, bookselling and library communities discuss aspects of scholarly books and their possible futures: for example, the role of the editor, peer review, academic bookshops and libraries, open access, digital publishing and technology. The content – in a range of peer-reviewed formats including videos, blogs, chapters and reports – presents a fascinating variety of insights into the constantly evolving contexts of the academic book and will be of interest to anyone working in the HE sector and the publishing industry, and, indeed, to anyone interested in how ideas are disseminated to a wider general audience.
