உலகம் சமூக ஊடகங்களை எப்படி மாற்றியிருக்கிறது

ஒன்பது மானுடவியலாளர்கள் பிரேசில், சீனா, இந்தியா, துருக்கி, இங்கிலாந்து, சிலி, டிரினிடாட், இத்தாலி போன்ற ஒன்பது வெவ்வேறு சமூகங்களில் 15 மாதங்களை தங்கியிருந்து நடத்திய ஆய்வின் கண்டுபிடிப்புகளை ஆராயும் “நாம் ஏன் பதிவிடுகிறோம்” என்ற புத்தக வரிசையின் முதல் புத்தகம் தான் உலகம் சமூக ஊடகங்களை எப்படி மாற்றியிருக்கிறது என்ற இந்தப் புத்தகம். இது மேற்கூறிய ஆராய்ச்சியின் முடிவுகளை தொகுத்து வழங்கியும், அரசியல், கல்வி, பாலினம், வணிகம் ஆகியவற்றின் மீது சமூக ஊடகங்களின் தாக்கத்தைப் பற்றி ஆராய்ந்தும், ஒரு ஒப்பீட்டு ஆய்வினை வழங்குகிறது. காட்சிக்குரிய தகவல் பரிமாற்றத்தின் மீதான அதிக முக்கியத்துவத்தின் விளைவுகள் என்ன? நாம் அதிக தனிமையானவர்களாக ஆகிவருகிறோமா அல்லது அதிக சமூகமயமானவர்களாக ஆகிவருகிறோமா? பொதுநோக்கிய சமூக ஊடகங்கள் ஏன் மிகவும் பழமைவாதம் நிறைந்ததாக இருக்கிறது? நிகழ்நிலையில் உள்ள சமத்துவத்தால், இயல்புநிலையில் உள்ள சமத்துவமின்மையை ஏன் மாற்ற முடியவில்லை? மீம்கள் எப்படி இணையத்தின் மரபுக் காவலர்களாக மாறின? போன்றவை தான் அவை.

செயல்திட்டத்தை கல்விக் கட்டமைப்பு மற்றும் கண்டுபிடிப்புகளுக்கு பொறுப்பேற்க உதவும் கருத்தியல் கூறுகள் ஆகியவற்றிற்கான அறிமுகவுரையின் துணையுடன், இந்தப் புத்தகம், சமூக ஊடகங்கள் போன்ற எங்குமுளத்தன்மையுள்ள, மிகவும் நெருக்கமான ஒன்றை புரிந்து கொண்டு பாராட்ட ஒரே வழி, அதில் பதிவிடும் மக்களின் வாழ்வில் மூழ்கிப் பார்ப்பது தான் என்று வாதிடுகிறது. அப்போது தான் நம்மால், உலகெங்கிலும் உள்ள மக்கள் சமூக ஊடகங்களை எவ்வாறு எதிர்பாராத வழிகளில் மாற்றியிருக்கின்றனர் என்று கண்டறிந்து அதன் விளைவுகளை எடைபோட முடியும்.

Sri Lanka at the Crossroads of History

The peoples of Sri Lanka have participated in far-flung trading networks, religious formations, and Asian and European empires for millennia. This interdisciplinary volume sets out to draw Sri Lanka into the field of Asian and Global History by showing how the latest wave of scholarship has explored the island as a ‘crossroads’, a place defined by its openness to movement across the Indian Ocean.

Experts in the history, archaeology, literature and art of the island from c.500 BCE to c.1850 CE use Lankan material to explore a number of pressing scholarly debates. They address these matters from their varied disciplinary perspectives and diverse array of sources, critically assessing concepts such as ethnicity, cosmopolitanism and localisation, and elucidating the subtle ways in which the foreign may be resisted and embraced at the same time. The individual chapters, and the volume as a whole, are a welcome addition to the history and historiography of Sri Lanka, as well as studies of the Indian Ocean region, kingship, colonialism, imperialism, and early modernity.

Social Theory after the Internet

The internet has fundamentally transformed society in the past 25 years, yet existing theories of mass or interpersonal communication do not work well in understanding a digital world. Nor has this understanding been helped by disciplinary specialization and a continual focus on the latest innovations. Ralph Schroeder takes a longer-term view, synthesizing perspectives and findings from various social science disciplines in four countries: the United States, Sweden, India and China. His comparison highlights, among other observations, that smartphones are in many respects more important than PC-based internet uses.

Social Theory after the Internet focuses on everyday uses and effects of the internet, including information seeking and big data, and explains how the internet has gone beyond traditional media in, for example, enabling Donald Trump and Narendra Modi to come to power. Schroeder puts forward a sophisticated theory of the role internet plays, and how both technological and social forces shape its significance. He provides a sweeping and penetrating study, theoretically ambitious and at the same time always empirically grounded.

The book covers key contemporary debates in a clear and accessible way. It will be of great interest to students and scholars of digital media and society, the internet and politics, and the social implications of big data.

Self-Build Homes

Self-Build Homes connects the burgeoning interdisciplinary research on self-build with commentary from leading international figures in the self-build and wider housing sector. Through their focus on community, dwelling, home and identity, the chapters explore the various meanings of self-build housing, encouraging new directions for discussions about self-building and calling for the recognition of the social dimensions of this process, from consideration of the structures, policies and practices that shape it, through to the lived experience of individuals and households.

Divided into four parts – Discourse, Rationale, Meaning; Values, Lifestyles, Imaginaries; Community and Identity; and Perspectives from Practice – the volume comes at a time of renewed focus from policy managers and practitioners, as well as prospective builders themselves, on self-build as a means for producing homes that are more stylised, affordable and appropriate for the specific needs of households. It responds to recent advances in housing and planning policy, while also bringing this into conversation with interdisciplinary perspectives from across the social sciences on housing, home and homemaking. In this way, the book seeks to update understandings of self-build and to account for housing as a distinctly social process.

Feminism and the Politics of Childhood

Feminism and the Politics of Childhood offers an innovative and critical exploration of perceived commonalities and conflicts between women and children and, more broadly, between various forms of feminism and the politics of childhood. This unique collection of 18 chapters brings into dialogue authors from a range of geographical contexts, social science disciplines, activist organisations, and theoretical perspectives. The wide variety of subjects include refugee camps, care labour, domestic violence and childcare and education.

Chapter authors focus on local contexts as well as their global interconnections, and draw on diverse theoretical traditions such as poststructuralism, psychoanalysis, posthumanism, postcolonialism, political economy, and the ethics of care. Together the contributions offer new ways to conceptualise relations between women and children, and to address injustices faced by both groups.

Consumer Data Research

Big Data collected by customer-facing organisations – such as smartphone logs, store loyalty card transactions, smart travel tickets, social media posts, or smart energy meter readings – account for most of the data collected about citizens today. As a result, they are transforming the practice of social science. Consumer Big Data are distinct from conventional social science data not only in their volume, variety and velocity, but also in terms of their provenance and fitness for ever more research purposes. The contributors to this book, all from the Consumer Data Research Centre, provide a first consolidated statement of the enormous potential of consumer data research in the academic, commercial and government sectors – and a timely appraisal of the ways in which consumer data challenge scientific orthodoxies.

Being Modern

In the early decades of the twentieth century, engagement with science was commonly used as an emblem of modernity. This phenomenon is now attracting increasing attention in different historical specialties. The book will be a valuable resource for students, and a spur to scholars to further examination of culture as an interconnected web of which science was a critical part, and to supersede such tired formulations as ‘Science and culture’.

Being Young, Male and Muslim in Luton

What is it like to be a young Muslim man in post-7/7 Britain, and what impact do wider political factors have on the multifaceted identities of young Muslim men? Drawn from the author’s ethnographic research of British-born Muslim men in the English town of Luton, Being Young, Male and Muslim in Luton explores the everyday lives of the young men and, in particular, how their identity as Muslims has shaped the way they interact with each other, the local community and the wider world.

Through a study of religious values, the pressures of masculinity, the complexities of family and social life, and attitudes towards work and leisure, Ashraf Hoque argues that young Muslims in Luton are subverting what it means to be ‘British’ through consciously prioritising and re-articulating self-confessed ‘Muslim identities’ in novel and dynamic ways that suit their experiences as a post-colonial diaspora. Employing extensive participant observation and rich interview content, Hoque paints a detailed picture of young Muslims living in a town consistently associated in the popular media with terrorist activity and as a hotbed for radicalisation. He challenges widely held assumptions about cultural segregation, gender relations and personal liberty in Muslim communities, and gives voice to an emerging generation of Muslims who view Britain as their home and are very much invested in the long-term future of the country and their permanent place within it.
