About UCL Press

Do you publish open access materials?

All UCL Press books and journal content is open access. We are proud to have been the UK’s first fully open access in 2015.

How is UCL Press funded?

UCL Press is subsidised to a large degree by its parent institution, UCL, to provide open access publishing and delivers significant impact for the university. Its books and journals have been downloaded in the millions around the world since it launched in 2015. UCL is committed to an Open Science future and believes that research should be made freely available to all. It therefore sees UCL Press’s open access model as a valuable and necessary investment. UCL Press has income streams from print sales, BPCs, grants and consultancy, which offset some of the institutional investment.

As part of this programme, UCL Press books are preserved by Portico, a community-supported preservation archive that safeguards access to e-journals, e-books, and digital collections. They ensure that ensures that the content they preserve will remain accessible and usable for researchers, scholars, and students in the future. Both JSTOR and Portico are owned by ITHAKA, a US-based non-profit organisation.
